Foodie Friday started when a group of friends at Cal, jaded by the dorm food at Crossroads their freshman year, began cooking once a week in their apartments. It started off simple, with pastas and chilis, and gradually evolved into a weekly event with themes like Fondue Night and Southern Night.

When a core group of them lived together in the summer of 2009, and began cooking together throughout the week, the Foodie Friday blog was born to chronicle their adventures.

A few years ago, the producers Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand were working with other musicians, like the New York salsa legend Joe Bataan, when they decided to start something from the ground up. The result is the Phenomenal Handclap Band, and you’ll need both hands to count all the personnel, which sometimes includes members of the Dap-Kings and TV on the Radio. What makes this collective appealing is its disregard for genre, which is no longer a new strategy, though this bunch reaches its own spacey conclusions. Collás and Marquand are both d.j.s with a taste for psychedelic disco and rock, and this makes their outfit feel more like a commune than an army. Songs drift from Miami disco into Brazilian soul into early New York rap, much like a friendly night at a bar with a guy flipping through his favorite records. The relaxed feel masks a lot of work—you can’t just invite your ten best friends down to the pub and hope they make sense of decades of music history. The band plays at the Bowery Ballroom Dec. 11.

Absinthe was invented in 1797 by Dr. Pierre Ordinaire. Henri-Louis Pernod opened the first absinthe distillery in Switzerland and then moved to a larger one in Pontarlier, France in 1805. By the 1850’s it had become the favorite drink of the upper class. Originally wine based, a blight in 1870’s on the vineyards forced manufacturers to base it with grain alcohol. Everyone could now afford it. The bohemian lifestyle embraced it.

Jim Pugliese:

Jim Pugliese is a drummer, percussionist and composer. In his most recent work he combines years of experience improvising, playing new and experimental music and world music.

Jim grew up listening to and playing soul music and rhythm and blues. He later went on to study percussion with Raymond Des Roches performing and or recording new music with John Cage, Lukas Foss, Kent Nagano, Philip Glass and Carlos Chavez. He spent twelve years as a member of Dean Drummond’s Newband and The Harry Partch Ensemble, studying and performing microtonal music. At the same time he developed an interest in Afro-Cuban music and studied drumming and rhythm with Master Drummer Pablo Landrum.

For the last fifteen years, while living in the east village of New York City, Jim has been improvising and recording with many of downtowns most prominent composer/improvisers including John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Zeena Parkins, David Shea and Anthony Coleman. He has recorded on over sixty CD’s of new music, jazz, rock and movie soundtracks. Jim has established himself as both performer and composer throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. In 1993 the new music group Newband recorded his composition FREEZE for the Mode recording label. In 1998 Jim was selected as Artist In Residence at Harvestworks in NYC where he recorded his solo CD “Sonic Soul”. He performs regularly with Philip Glass and on November 23rd, 1997 Avant released the first cd for his collaborative trio Easside Percussion with Christine Bard and Michael Evans. This group is about to release their second CD for the Tzadik label.

Jim is also a dedicated educator and has created and designed numerous workshops including; “Problems and Solutions for New and Experimental Composition”, “Extended and Improvisation Techniques” and “History and Interpretation of Graphic Scores”.

In his ongoing quest to explore the powerful, enlightening and spiritual secrets of drumming Jim is currently collaborating with Nii Tettey Tetteh master musician from Ghana, continuing his work with Milford Graves on learning drumming and healing through the heartbeat and studying the spiritual songs of the Mbira Dzavadzimu from Zimbabwe.

His current projects include a collaborative band “IDR” with Marco Cappelli, exploring the relationship between Southern Italian Folk Music and Improvisation and his band “Phase III” for which he composes music reflecting his many years of experience in new music and improvisation.

Have a drink. Mango juice? Cinzano and soda? A double long espresso? Something to eat?

Rik shows you to a seat with a fine view of both the Toronto skyline and the goings-on around the café. You feel like a character in a movie.

You notice, in a corner, a mysterious person occasionally peering over a book, but the dancers have entered and all attention turns to the stage.
